About Us

Jim, Helen & Mia

One fateful day in June of 2000, we found our dream home, a beautiful old farmhouse with a very lonely bank barn and our lives have never been the same. Not long after we moved in we stumbled onto Alpacas, and the lonely barn was quickly filled with these fleecy humming beauties.

Our philosophy was to build an elite herd of alpacas by choosing our initial herd from some of the finest bloodlines in North America. Offspring from some of the most renowned herdsires from New England to the Pacific Coast. It's been six short years, our pastures are now home to over 60 Huacaya alpacas. We have had the thrill of watching over almost 100 crias come into the world to date, with many more due this year.

Our Foundation Herd . . .

Our initial purchases included the 1st generation offspring of some of the most sought after bloodlines in the US: Bueno, Caligula, Hemingway and many more. We've been given a very nice palette to work with. Now six years into the Alpaca business, we've produced many Champions of our own Showcase including some up-and-coming Herdsires who we are now using in our breeding program Herdsires

With our foundation herd in place we've set out to create a breeding program that will compliment and/or improve all of our existing females…

At Silvercloud Farm we strive to match each and every female with a superior
male with a PROVEN TRACK RECORD of passing his quality traits on to his crias.
We conduct annual histograms to ensure our program is headed in the right direction. Our goal is to see improvement with each and every generation.

We strive to breed for Alpacas with:

• Excellent Conformation with solid heavy bone
• Uniform & Dense Fleeces that are very fine and crimpy
• Consistent Histogram Results and Gentle Dispositions

The hard work and careful choices we've made for our breeding program are now paying dividends. Whether you are looking to add some diversity to an existing herd or wish to build a foundation herd, Silvercloud Farm is a great place to start. We’d love to have you visit and you’ll be glad you did. Contact us now to schedule a farm visit!

We welcome your visit any time to meet our wonderful herd or breed to one of our Award-Winning Herdsires.

Silvercloud Farm is just 20 miles north of & in the beautiful rolling hills of Pittsburgh, PA.

HELEN IS NOW AN AOBA CERTIFIED HALTER & FLEECE JUDGE!!!

It's official! Helen has just been certified as both a Halter & Fleece Judge! It's been a long and arduous process but we are very proud of her accomplishments!!!

Helen Humphreys is a graduate of Penn State University (Bachelor's, Liberal Arts) and La Roche College (Master's, Human Resource Management). She has worked as Human Resource Manager for her family's business, Trace Services, Inc., a contracting company for Utility Companies. Helen has always been an animal lover and longed to be a Veterinarian growing up in the North Hills of Pittsburgh. Jim & Helen were married in 1998 and soon after bought a farm on ten acres north of Pittsburgh. It was Helen who was determined to put "something" out in those pastures and barn, and began to do research on Alpacas.

Helen is very involved in the alpaca community...

Helen has just completed her term as President of the Pennsylvania Alpacas and Breeders Association (PAOBA) and Chairs the Pennsylvania Breeders Showcase. She is also a member of the AOBA Nominating Committee.

Helen & Debbie Hirt from West Penn Alpacas have formed Silver Penn Sales an Alpaca Auction company.

Jim Humphreys

Jim Humphreys is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration and Studio Art. He has worked in both Sales and Management. Jim is also an artist, photographer and musician. Like Helen, an animal lover while growing up, Jim always dreamed of becoming a Veterinarian (Jim's father was a Physician). When Helen came to Jim with the idea of raising alpacas, Jim was very skeptical. Soon, Jim fell in love with these animals as well and after a great deal of research into this business was thoroughly convinced that this was their calling! Jim now manages the day-to-day operations and Marketing at Silvercloud Farm, handling all of the animal husbandry duties. You'll see Jim in the showring at the alpaca shows as Jim handles most of the animals in the ring.
